Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the option to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
